This post was posted by The Hipmunk on Hipmunk’s Tailwind blog on 17th November 2015. The airline Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA just announced its plan to sell $69 one-way tickets to Europe from select U.S. airports. The initiative is slated to roll out by as soon as 2017 (although for would-be international travelers, “soon” might be a relative term). Flying to Europe On a Budget: Here’s the Scoop While the lure of cheap international tickets may have travel-lovers drooling, travelers looking to take advantage of the deals will be limited to only a few destinations—namely, Edinburgh, Scotland, and Bergen, Norway. The airline believes it can reduce fares by flying out of U.S. […]

This post was posted by The Hipmunk on Hipmunk’s Tailwind blog on 13th October 2015. Although the Concorde flew for over 25 years, today the idea of a commercial supersonic jet seems like the stuff of legend. One group says they can revive the jet, however, and bring back a faster and more luxurious era of travel. Jointly developed by French and British and released commercially in 1976, the Concorde traveled at twice the speed of sound. Today, a normal passenger route from New York to Paris takes eight hours, but the Concorde could do it in three and a half. It once even managed London to Sydney […]

This post was posted by The Hipmunk on Hipmunk’s Tailwind blog on 15th October 2015. In the USA, Halloween is truly an all-ages celebration. For kids, the day means trick-or-treating, costume parades, and an excuse to indulge in candy. For adults, the day/night entails house parties and bar crawls, costume contests, and an excuse to indulge in candy (among other things)! Throw in a haunted house or a Jack-O-Lantern carving party and Halloween has become a holiday with reliable traditions. Itching to try something new? Consider celebrating Halloween abroad this year! The following destinations have their own distinct versions of America’s spookiest celebration. 1. Mexico Perhaps the most […]

Recently I found out about an excellent new European Trip planning website, called RoutePerfect. RoutePerfect is an online DIY trip planning tool that helps you design and create your own trip itineraries based on your travel preferences, budget and personal style. I haven’t seen anything like it for a long time and I’ve been testing the site the last few weeks, loving the way it works! When you click on the homepage on the right hand side, you input the following details: Where your trip begins How long your trip will last for Your style of travel Your budget of travel Where your trip will end So you fill all that in […]

This post was posted by TheHipmunk on Hipmunk’s Tailwind blog on September 21st 2015. On September 9, Queen Elizabeth II became the longest reigning British monarch in history, passing the record set by her grandmother, Queen Victoria. In her 63 years on the throne, she has seen the world move into the modern age politically, culturally, and scientifically. She may well go down in history as the technological Queen: her coronation in Westminster Abbey was the first ever to be broadcast on television, and her annual Christmas broadcast is now available on YouTube. She even wrote her first tweet last year about London’s Science Museum. The […]

Some of us have disposable income and crave a second home, in a different country. A home away from home and somewhere we can relax while on our holidays, yet also feel at home there. The biggest question has to be – where should you buy your international holiday home? If you have been wondering where to buy a holiday home, then it’s cool to see that Schofields have put together a really impressive Infographic on Where to Buy an International Holiday Home. I love the detail that it has – goes into great detail and provides facts on places like Manhattan and Shanghai to […]

Regardless of the season or time of the year, there is never a bad time to visit Italy, which is just one of the many reasons why the south European country should be high on your list of places to visit. From historical architecture to great food and renowned monuments, Italy is blessed with many noteworthy highlights. And although it was a difficult task to narrow them down, below is a list of five good reasons to finally take that trip to Italy: 1. Magnificent Cities Few places match the historical significance of Rome, and while the capital is as contemporary as other first […]

You might have read about my recent return to England and the charms I enjoyed there not to mention catching up with some old friends. I visited hippy Camden Town again, breezed my way through London and wound up in Birmingham and Liverpool again. Liverpool is of course home to the Beatles – the greatest rock n roll band of all time. Lennon lovers and McCartney maniacs rave about their trips to Liverpool to ride in a fake yellow submarine, drink some beer down the Cavern Club and get their hair cut on Penny Lane. Away from all that you need a decent place to stay and the superb Elegant […]

Deep within London, away from all those busy office blocks sits remarkable Camden Town. This gem of a place is a hippy commune. It’s famous for its canals, its downright good music, its drug and sex scene and general hippy stuff! If you read our cool post on backpacking through Christiania in Copenhagen recently, this place is even funkier but without the whole crazy sh*t of leaving the country. In Christiania you’ve left Denmark for a hippy freetown. Here in Camden, your body is still in England, your mind might be elsewhere. Here are 5 top things to check out in Camden Town, London, England. […]
