Those people who are interested in sports may wish to combine a vacation with a tour of some of the most significant sporting cities in America, a country that, thanks to its football and baseball, can be said to be almost defined by its sporting heritage.

The top cities to visit

Just what defines a sporting super city? To be included in this very select group, a city must have a minimum of two professional sport teams in one of the four major sports – football, hockey, baseball, and basketball. Plus as a Brit, we also get to add “soccer” as the fifth sport now!

Washington D.C., as well as offering the tourist a host of wonderful historical sites to visit, is also home to the Redskins. Formed in 1932, the Redskins football team have won five National Football League (NFL) championships and played in more than 1,000 games. They were the first football team to have created an official marching band and their own game song, “Hail to the Redskins.” The team has an extremely loyal, die-hard fan base.

Detroit has the Red Wings, one of the original six members of the National Hockey League (NHL). They are the only American hockey team to have won 11 Stanley Cup championships, and their home arena seats more than 20,000 of their fans, who are fanatical about the team. They are one of the most popular franchises in the NHL, causing Detroit and its surrounding areas to be known as “Hockeytown.”

In Los Angeles can be found the Dodgers, a baseball team founded in 1883, and members of the Major League Baseball (MLB). The Dodgers have won the World Series title six times, and have 21 National League pennants to their name. Home for the Dodgers is the aptly named Dodger Stadium, which is the third-oldest ballpark in the league.

Back on football, tourists to Philadelphia will be able to experience the Philadelphia Eagles, members of the NFL. They have won the NFL title three times, but lost both their games at the Super Bowl. They were founded in 1931, replacing a bankrupt football team known as the Frankford Yellow Jackets. Fans of the Eagles have been described as rabid, and games have been known to get a little bit intense, for both the players and spectators.

Finally, fans of basketball should visit Cleveland to see the Cleveland Cavaliers, also known as the Cavs. These are a fairly young team, founded in 1970, but they have enjoyed moderate success, winning three titles in the Central Division Championships, most recently in 2010. Their most high profile and successful player, LeBron James, left the team after the 2010 season, but returned earlier this year, and as a result they are being tipped as the favorite for the 2014-15 National Basketball Association (NBA) championships.

America has much to offer the sports fan, and many of their most famous and revered heroes, such as Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan, and Magic Johnson, came from the world of sport. Those who want to team a vacation with an induction into what it means to be an American sports fan should head to one of these cities to find out.
