Touring Melbourne: Five Cool Things to Do

Melbourne is quite simply a “backpacker’s classic” so while touring the city you will want to make the most of your time here before you move on to yet more Australian cliches. It’s a big city and pumps out a lot, leaving you with always things to see and do. Melbourne is well connected to other parts of Australia by train, by road ad also on internal flights. These are five cool things to do in Melbourne, which is the capital city of the Victoria Province of Australia.

1.Neighbours Tour
The famous Australian soap opera, which has been running for 30 years, is called Neighbours. You can do all sorts of Neighbours related tours, including a night out in a pub with Karl Kenedy and his band. We took the textbook day tour though and got onto Ramsay Street (real name is Pin Oak Court) and saw the spots where Charlene and Scott once hung out – that’s Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan.

2.Pub Crawl
Australians know how to put on a good pub crawl and one night, we went on an epic organised pub crawl with Urban Central Hostel. Our host was Gerry, a Northern Irish guy and this remains a travel highlight from my back catalogue when I killed the ghost of Noemi and won the karaoke competition in an Irish Pub called Bridie O Reillys.

3.AC DC Museum
Australian rock band AC DC hail from the city and a superb tribute and museum is here for all to see. There are also some wacky tours you can organise if you’re a mega fan – they will take you to places that AC DC used to hang out and were inspired by.

4.Aussie Rules Football
In this part of the world, the main sport is not rugby union. It’s not rugby league. It’s not football. It’s not tennis. It’s not even cricket! It is Aussie Rules football and the huge Melbourne Cricket Ground is the best place to watch Aussie Rules Football. Despite its name sounding like a cricket ground, there are four Aussie Rules teams that play their matches here – Collingwood, Hawthorn, Melbourne and Richmond.

5.Eureka Skydeck – Viewpoint
For a superb view of Melbourne from above – head to the Eureka Skydeck and get a great vantage point over this metropolis.
