Top 5 Sights in Starogard Gdański, Poland
When you tour Starogard Gdański as a foreigner, you often stand out as the only tourist in town. It’s a cool city away from the touristic appeal of Gdansk and the medieval fortress at Malbork. This is why I love towns like Starogard Gdański and write passionately about my touring in places like this. I stayed in the trendy Noclegi Rekord for a hat trick of nights and loved the vibes of the city.
These are my favourite sights though I also loved the bars of Starogard Gdański, a great place to meet locals by night.
1.Rynek (Market Square)
The main market square, known as the Rynek is a hive of activity. In Summer months, there are concerts, beer gardens and even a mock beach here. It’s a square that also features the Town Hall, the town’s oldest church (St. Matthew’s) and the town’s tallest church (St. Catherine’s). It’s a pretty and textbook style Polish square, an old town.
2.Kazimierz Deyna Stadium
I loved my visit to the Kazimierz Stadium, in fact my hotel was opposite it! A really cool yet surprising fact is that one of Poland’s greatest ever footballers came from this town, Starogard Gdański, Kazimierz Deyna. Deyna was an outstanding Poland international who died in 1989. He has a statue in the stands there.
3.Browar Bar and Restaurant
I love towns like Starogard Gdański as you always find some hidden travel gems beer wise. This cool bar and restaurant, Browar is in the downtown area near the Rynek and has loads of beers on tap – even better, some are local.
4.St. Catherine’s Church (Kościół sw Katarzyny)
Polish towns have numerous churches in them and this one is no different. Starogard has a few I could have included but I’ve opted to include St. Catherine’s Church as it is central and the most distinctive church in Starogard Gdański. It is right on the corner by the Rynek and appears prominently in most photographs to promote the town.
5.Pałac Wichertów
The final sight is a palace that is shut but it was cool to check out its exterior! It was also right next to my hotel and at first I didn’t give it much notice, but when I read up on it I realised this was an elaborate place that sadly is no longer open.
I hope these tips help you all out when you backpack this off the wall gem in rural Pomerskie province of Poland!
[…] Crossing World Borders Gdański […]
Hi Aleksandra. Yes I did and I loved it. Before I met you, I spent over 10 years touring the world! I visited over 130 countries, visitind lots of very unusual and interesting towns away from the tourist spots. I usually went there to meet travel friends like you. You were the first person on my journey to lie to me. Why did you do it? Why not meet me, show me the sights and tell me the bus route? I am still suicidal every day and will be forever, I will die of this depression. You said you will help me with Polish??! OK come and help me – it would be great! Safe travels. Love and peace. Jonny
