Everybody has heard of Rome and most of us want to go there on our travel adventures but with so much information on this beast of a city, where do you start? Perhaps a very obvious “textbook top 5” is the way to see this city – that way you get to see the main sights easily and can then pick and choose the oddball sights once you have these out of the way. As well – Rome is actually a lot cheaper than you’d expect. You can get a day card for the metro for around 7 Euros, unlimited travel!

Without further ado and with some cool personal photos from my time there, here are my top five things to do in Rome, Italy.

Ancient Rome, Italy

1.Colosseum
Who could ignore the iconic Colosseum? Not many backpackers pass through Rome and give this one a miss. Simply stunning work of art sitting magnificently in ancient Rome. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Wonder of the World etc.

2.Eat Gelato
Italian ice cream has to be one of the best in the world. Head to some fantastic downtown restaurants in the old quarter for a gelato treat! I couldn’t get enough of the stuff!

3.Cross into the Vatican City State
A country within another country’s capital city? Are you serious? Well, if I’m not, the Pope certainly is! Although this might be one of the strangest countries you ever visit, it boasts some magnificent museums, architecture and impressively the world’s largest church. You can also tell all your mates you went to a new country!

4.Trevi Fountain
A bit of an anti climax in recent years due to reconstruction works but it’s still world famous and you’ll want to join the thousands of other selfie takers here. The Trevi Fountain sits magnificently in a square with its famous art. The scaffolding might put you off but at least you can say you have been.

5.Pizza Fest
Napoli might be the home of pizza, but here in Rome you can get surprisingly good pizza at good prices. New York and Sao Paulo eat your heart out!

As well as these, Ancient Rome takes a good few hours out of you and don’t forget Rome is a hgreat city for cafes to watch the world go by in the daytime and party bars by night! Have a safe trip everyone.
